Chad Sugg | The Runaway
After the first hour of the preview being up, this seems to be everyone’s favorite song, lyrically, from my new EP. So, I thought I’d share it specifically here. One of my favorite lyrics I’ve literally ever written is in this song: “We’re all sons and daughters, the lie doesn’t help/My generation’s in love with itself”. Full lyrics below:
Let’s runaway to yesterday or somewhere better than now
I’ve got a car, a couple of dollars, and you
These wasted days, the films and the cowards,
The romance of just being through
With calling all these okay times golden
Man, I’m not lost, I’m just wandering
So go on
(All I know)
Make me run
(These roads are all I know)
Yeah, you know I’m not looking back
(All I know)
No, not for no one
We’re all sons and daughters
The lie doesn’t help, my generation’s in love with itself
I think we all could use a little more yesterdays
And I take my time
The fight doesn’t last, my whole damn life’s a song from my past
The chorus rings the psalm, “Nothing good ever stays”
When summer arrived, I squinted my eyes
‘Cause it didn’t look too familiar
Don’t trust the girls in California
The look in their eyes will kill ya
It’s strange times, the ones we’re living, the people we’re supposed to be
Are braver, and lighter, the heart of a liar is something you shouldn’t have to see
And I take my time
The fight doesn’t last, my whole damn life’s a song from my past
The chorus rings the psalm, “Nothing good ever stays”
But I’m gonna okay
Yeah, I’ll be okay
Don’t you worry about me
Don’t worry ‘bout me
New EP featuring this song is available tonight at midnight on iTunes :)

Chad Sugg | Love On Your Mind (UN-MASTERED BONUS TRACK)
For you night owls… Here’s the non-final version of the bonus track from my new EP that comes out Friday.
This one’s a slow jam, for a night like this one… It’s about being up at 1AM thinking about someone you happen to love.
On nights like these
I can’t sleep
When you got love on your mind
You don’t need anything
On nights like these
The trouble leaves
When you got her on your mind
You don’t need anything
No, I don’t need anything
No, I don’t need anything
I seriously write the best under pressure.
I’ve changed the tracklisting for my upcoming new EP probably about 10 times (literally) in the past four days because of new songs I’ve written since then that have turned out better than the ones I had.
That’s why I record albums like this now… I record them, then release them the day after I’m done, because artistically it makes me a very honest person with who I am at that very moment. I feel like it makes the music I need to release come out.
And who knows, maybe everyone will hate these songs and blah blah blah, but in all honesty, I haven’t written lyrics this good in quite a while. I know that much at least. (And I’m not saying I’m some profound writer, but I do think I have a pretty good ear/eye/whatever for when I’ve written something that I guess I would call “true and human’ (which are what I think are the best lyrics when it comes to songs I listen to)… And it’s happened a lot in the process of this specific recording.)
Sorry, just excited. Those who have followed my music know I get… gushy?… when it comes time for a new album/ep release. So, just gushing, I suppose.
I randomly started writing a brand new song today, and immediately scrapped a song that was previously on the EP because of it. I wrote a lyric in it that I’m kind of mystically in love with at the moment, and have been since I wrote it earlier today… The line is
“I didn’t know that you were gonna be such a good thing”
I ended up pouring over the chorus, trying to make it perfectly centered around that line, and after about 5 different variations this is what I came up with:
Being brave ain’t as fun as you think
It took a while for me to finally start to believe
Yeah, out of all the things I’ve done and seen
I didn’t know that you were gonna be such a good thing
Anywayyyyyyy.
I’m in love with the song as a whole. It doesn’t have a name yet, but it’s a very very personal one, very much about the person I’ve become in the past couple months in light of who I was before it. Aside from that, melodically, it feels good to sing. It’s the only song on the EP that’s going to be just acoustic with no other instruments at all, I believe.
I’ll stop for now.
Hope you’re all having a pleasant life. If you’re not, change it :)
Yours,
Chad
John (f*cking) Mayer.
Dear goodness.
Listening to the John Mayer new album preview stream on iTunes.
Fuck. So good. The kind of good that makes you want to live, and breathe, and write better songs, and makes you remember what you love about music.
There are already way too many great lyrics that stand out to me in the first four tracks, but I think this is my favorite so far:
“Well they’re celebrating broken things/I don’t want a world of broken things…”
The thing that sucks, is even though JM is quite well-off in his musical career, I feel like too many people I know don’t even give his music a chance. Seriously, folks, the man can write fucking great songs with lyrics that will knock you off your goddamn feet if you just give him a chance.
Signed,
A young man who’s very glad to have a new JM record in his life very soon

Bah, that's silly. I think your solo stuff is just as good as Backseat Goodbye, don't let someone tell you otherwise.
You’re too kind :)
But, what I said in regards to my first Chad Sugg EP being completely rushed, and not something I absolutely love entirely, is entirely true. This will all make sense once you hear how much better the new EP is, once it’s released. (Not that I think I’m some amazing songwriter and just know that everyone’s going to love my new EP (not saying that AT ALL)… But I am saying that as a songwriter, and personally, I know that my new EP is at great lengths better lyrically and musically than its predecessor).
:)
Saw this, and couldn’t not say anything…
1) Backseat Goodbye is still alive and well. I plan to actually even release another completely new album for it later this year.
2) I completely agree that my new solo stuff isn’t quality (YET). Let me explain… My only new solo EP under the name Chad Sugg was written/recorded/released in an enormous rush, in an effort to just have some original music out to go along with all of this YouTube stuff I’m doing. I hereby PROMISE that the new CS EP I’m releasing later this week actually has some quality songs on it as far as a songwriting perspective goes both lyrically and musically.
:)
